Articles Category Filter Block

What is the Article Category Filter block?

The Articles Category Filter system block provides a list of taxonomy terms from which a visitor can select to view a subset of articles by a specific category. The category filter block comes bundled with the /news or /blog view page by default.

How does it work?

When creating an article users have the ability to assign a primary and secondary category based on the either the default list provided by SiteFarm or by whatever terms you've added to the existing term list. The available list of category terms is located in your article's Additional Options » Categorizing section. Once the terms you wish to apply have been saved to the page, your site will then be able to identify it when a visitor selects one of the category terms and include the article in the subsequent result list.

List of Category Filter Blocks

This feature includes three specific blocks:

  • Articles Category Filter: Block - Blog
    • Bundled with the /blogs view page
    • Will only filter articles using the article type "blog"
  • Articles Category Filter: Block - News
    • Bundled with the /news view page
    • Will only filter articles using the article type "news"
  • Articles Category Filter: Block - Term
    • Available but not set by default
    • Will filter to /articles/{{term name}}
    • Will include any article, regardless of type, if it contains the selected article category
    • A good option if you're using multiple article types in your site (news AND/OR blogs AND/OR a custom article type)

How to find and use the Category Filter Block to show all articles of a specific term

  1. Navigate to your /news, /blogs, or custom article view and click the Place Block button.
  2. Using this block follows the same steps as any other block you might place on your site. Please refer to the placing blocks write-up if you're uncertain of the steps.
  3. From the Place Block search/filter field, search for "Articles Category Filter: Block - Term".
  4. Review the configuration options, though you can accept the block as-is, and finish by clicking the Place Block button.
  5. If applying the block to the /news or /blogs page, be aware you will need to remove the existing block. This will remove the block from the page but won't delete it from your system; if you need to put it back, you can do so using using the above steps but searching for "Articles Category Filter: Block - News" or "Articles Category Filter: Block - Blog".
