Web Workers,

The IET Drupal development team has been hard at work making what is arguably the greatest improvement to SiteFarm since its initial roll out. They have added a custom page creation tool called Layout Builder that lets users escape the rigidly structured pages of SiteFarm's past and allows for the creation of more dynamic layouts with a myriad of new design features. These features include, but are not limited to: custom section styles, background colors, background images, layout spacing and a few new design components pulled directly from the UC Davis homesite.

The new tool will grant you the ability to save sections, layouts and entire pages as templates so you can reuse them throughout your website. We will also be saving templates centrally in SiteFarm so anyone in the SiteFarm Community can get easy access to strat comm approved design starters to quickly build new web products.

If your first question is..."Will this break my current site?" The answer is no. This new tech is additive, so you will only need to learn how to use it if you choose to add it, though some of the new features will add capabilities to your existing structured content. The addition of Layout Builder will not change your existing pages.

For the 8/16 meeting Tom Watts, along with the principal architects of the tool, IET's Mark Miller and Anthony Horn will intro this amazing improvement and walk you through just a few of the many new design opportunities presented by Layout Builder. Tatiana Muniz will add a short preso on the implications of layout in SEO.

Agenda:

  • MAINSTAGE: Mark Miller and Anthony Horn introduce Layout Builder and a few major upgrades to SiteFarm.
  • UXCITED: Tom Watts will demonstrate how to create a homepage from scratch in Layout Builder.
  • MAKE IT PRETTY: Tom will create a SiteFarm page by importing templates already created in the new component library.
  • SITEFARM DEEPCUTS: Anthony Horn will demonstrate the layout and spacing options for sections in Layout Builder and some of the other pro-tips for LB page creation.
  • JUST NO: Mark Miller will show you how to avoid some of the accessibility and design pitfalls possible with the new section styles.
  • SEO YEAH: Tatiana Muniz will share some of the SEO implications of dynamic layouts.
